Ribbon cutting held for natural gas expansion project in Pontotoc County

SUMMARY: Public Service commissioner and Democratic candidate for governor, Brandon Presley, recently cut the ribbon to mark the fourth phase of Atmos Energy's rural Expansion Project in Pontotoc County. This initiative will connect natural gas to around 60 homes, bringing the total number of homes with access to natural gas in the area to 200. Presley believes that this expansion will lower energy costs for residents and promote economic development in rural Pontotoc County. Thus far, Atmos Energy has invested approximately $24 million in extending natural gas service to 46 communities and completing over 130 projects.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles were down 4-1 at home to Ole Miss but they scored six unanswered to get their first win over an in-state foe this season. USM extends their win streak to 8 games.

Cicadas, cicadas everywhere: How they are helpful

SUMMARY: Cicadas are making a lot of noise near ITA Agricultural High School in Mississippi, where they are being used as an educational tool by teachers. While some find the noise irritating, teachers are incorporating the cicadas' life cycle into their lessons. However, for residents living near wooded areas, the cicadas' loud singing can be a nuisance. Experts say the cicadas will start to clear out in early June. Despite the annoyance, the cicadas serve as a natural phenomenon that offers educational opportunities and a chance to learn more about their life cycle. Gabe Mayor from WTV A9 News reported on the noisy bugs.

The cicadas are screaming, and though it may be annoying, one school says they are a helpful tool.

Man pleads guilty to starting fire at New Albany warehouse

SUMMARY: Eddie Greer pleaded guilty to starting a warehouse fire in New Albany in March. The fire occurred in 2019 at Thomas Wholesale Furniture. Greer was arrested in 2022 along with Steven Thomas after being indicted by a grand jury. Greer's sentencing date is unknown, while Thomas has yet to go on trial.
