Controversy remains after Columbus City Council override mayor's annexation veto

SUMMARY: The Columbus city council overrode Mayor Keith Gaskin's veto on the annexation of parts of Lou County into the city of Columbus, causing controversy. Mayor Gaskin believes the decision was rushed and could have negative effects on the city's growth. The annexation would increase the population size by 88.2%, decrease median income by 49%, and increase the poverty level by 3%. Residents in the affected areas are against the annexation, believing they should have the freedom to live outside the city. However, city councilman Steven Jones argues that those benefitting from city resources should also pay city taxes. The proposal will now go before the court for further decision.

SUMMARY: Graduation season is here, a special day for students celebrating their hard work and achievement. WTV Jake White reported live from the ICC campus in Tupelo, where the energy was incredible. Graduates expressed happiness at finally walking across the stage after years of hard work. The event was packed with new grads and their loved ones at the Davis Event Center. Some graduates shared their feelings of accomplishment and gratitude towards their teachers and peers. State House speaker Jason White also congratulated the graduates. Overall, it was a day of celebration and pride for all the college graduates.
