SUMMARY: Mississippi continues to face extreme drought conditions, leading to a burn ban in many counties across the state. Since August 1, there have been 1,030 fires, burning 16,000 acres, and firefighters have protected around 1,885 structures. The Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) is urging the public to comply with burn bans to prevent wildfires, as October is typically a dry month. While recent rainfall has helped, 55 counties are still under a partial burn ban. The MFC warns that the drought’s effects will persist until the end of October, and that human-caused sparks can easily start wildfires.

SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and Mississippi Education Board member Mary Werner are advocating to keep the U.S. history assessment in Mississippi’s public schools. Though not federally mandated, the state board’s commission voted to eliminate the test, pending a final decision. Wicker and Werner argue the test ensures students graduate with essential civic knowledge. Topics covered include major political ideologies, landmark events, and government functions. Opponents argue cutting the test allows more focus on career training and reduces “teaching to the test.” Wicker and Werner maintain the benefits outweigh the trade-offs, emphasizing history’s role in preparing responsible future voters.
