One Lake Project
SUMMARY: Environmental groups have obtained a document showing that the One Lake flood control project will not prevent massive flooding in Jackson, Mississippi. Supporters of One Lake accuse the groups of misleading the public, while the environmental groups believe they have new evidence to stop the controversial project. The US Army Corps of Engineers' internal presentation raised questions about the viability and effectiveness of the One Lake plan, citing potential flooding of structures in the study area and downstream. The Corps also presented alternative plans, including one that would elevate or flood-proof 600 structures in the floodplain. The Corps plans to issue a final environmental impact statement early next year.
