Canton Flood Project
SUMMARY: County leaders in Canton, Mississippi are working on a $23.5 million project called the Bear Creek Watershed Plan and Environmental Assessment to prevent and reduce flooding in the area. The project is being funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conversation Service and is the first project sponsored by the Madison County Board of Supervisors. The goal is to mitigate the flooding that occurs during heavy rain in Canton by implementing projects that improve water drainage. Possible solutions include retention ponds, property buy-outs, and other structural solutions. The project is expected to take months to complete. Additionally, the project aims to improve water quality in streams with high nutrient and sediment loads. Minor projects are already underway and should be completed in the next few months.
