Oklahomans voting on whether to retain 3 state Supreme Court justices
SUMMARY: This year, Oklahoma voters will decide whether to keep or remove three state Supreme Court justices, a decision that occurs every two years. The justices are not running against anyone; it’s a referendum on their tenure. Ads for and against the justices have surfaced, with opponents labeling them as liberal, while supporters emphasize the importance of maintaining non-political integrity in the judiciary. Correspondent Dakota Wakai is covering the developments, and more information is available on their website as they follow the reactions from both Republican and Democratic parties in Oklahoma.

New details in defamation suit against State Supt. Ryan Walters
SUMMARY: A defamation lawsuit has been filed against Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters by Rob Miller, the superintendent of Bixby Public Schools. The case revolves around Walters’ comments made on July 31, where he described Miller as a “liar” and an “embarrassment” in response to inquiries about Miller’s request for Title I funding estimates. Walters’ defense cites immunity under the Oklahoma Government Tort Claims Act, asserting that his statements were made while performing his official duties. A Tulsa County judge recently heard arguments from both parties, with a ruling expected in 30 days.

Edmond police officer seeks immunity in brother's shooting
SUMMARY: Lieutenant Jennifer Haddock of the Edmond Police Department shot her brother, Sean, in August 2023, and is seeking immunity from prosecution under Oklahoma’s Stand Your Ground law. During a 911 call, she reported the incident, stating, “I just shot my brother.” The court documents indicate Sean was under the influence of meth and fentanyl, posing a dangerous threat while blocking her exit in their mother’s apartment. Haddock’s attorney argues she acted in self-defense after attempting de-escalation and faced imminent danger. The law allows individuals to use deadly force if they reasonably believe it’s necessary to prevent significant harm.
