New partnership at Southern Miss brings teacher apprenticeship opportunities to students
SUMMARY: The University of Southern Mississippi's Registered Teacher Apprenticeship (RTA) program is the first in Mississippi to earn recognition by the state's Department of Labor. The RTA program allows students to train with professionals, gaining hands-on experience in teaching. With a recently expanded list of apprenticeship programs, now including teaching, the initiative aims to address teacher recruitment and retention challenges. The program provides a pathway to earn a degree, teaching license, and potentially a stable career. Brenda Myers from the U.S. DOL Office of Apprenticeship praised USM's leadership in this endeavor and looks forward to expanding apprenticeships in other fields.
