New policies in place for Rankin County Sheriff’s Office
SUMMARY: Rankin County Sheriff's Office has updated its training and policies after six former officers pled guilty to torturing two Black men in January. The sentencing for the former officers is set for January 2024. The department has revamped its patrol policy and procedure manual and has hired an internal affairs investigator from outside of the department. The changes come after the case involving members of the “Goon Squad.” The men admitted in August to subjecting Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker to numerous acts of racially motivated, violent torture. The officers taunted the men with racial slurs and poured milk, alcohol, and chocolate syrup over their faces. After a false coverup, the conspiracy unraveled, leading to confessions from the officers.

Governor signs bill banning ‘squatted vehicles’ in Mississippi
SUMMARY: Beginning July 1, driving “squatted vehicles” with front fenders raised four inches or more higher than the rear fenders will be illegal on Mississippi roads. Governor Tate Reeves signed House Bill 349 into law, making it a misdemeanor to drive these modified motor vehicles. The law aims to improve road safety, as the configuration of squatted vehicles poses visibility issues and potential dangers for other drivers. Truck owners are encouraged to ensure their vehicles comply with the new regulations, with local businesses offering free assistance in measuring and adjusting vehicle height. Violators could face fines or a suspended driver's license.
