New lawsuit complains about nitrogen gas execution in Alabama

SUMMARY: Lawyers for a spiritual advisor to an Alabama row inmate are arguing that restrictions on how close the advisor can get to the inmate in the death chamber are hostile to religion. Reverend Jeff Hood plans to enter the death chamber to minister to Kenneth Smith, but the Alabama Department of Corrections has asked him to sign a form acknowledging the risk and agreeing to stay 3 feet away from Smith's gas mask. Hood believes that these restrictions would interfere with his ability to minister to Smith before he is put to death, and show a lack of respect for witnesses intending to witness the execution.

The incident occurred around 6:30 AM on Friday morning, resulting in the shooting of Joshua Bennett. A witness reported hearing four to six shots and seeing the shooter grab a backpack before leaving the scene. Police emphasize the importance of individual responsibility in such cases and stress the need for respect in the community.
