National Hurricane Center monitoring system off Carolinas; Nigel now a hurricane
SUMMARY: The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area off the Carolinas for potential tropical development, with a 20% chance of development over the next seven days. If trends continue, the likelihood of development is expected to increase. Two primary forecast models show different outcomes. The American GFS model shows a potential tropical storm moving inland over South Carolina, bringing widespread rain to central North Carolina. The European ECMWF model shows a “non-tropical” low forming just offshore of South Carolina, bringing heavy rain along the coast but lower totals inland. Hurricane Nigel has strengthened into a hurricane and is expected to rapidly strengthen further.
