Mississippians attend Ash Wednesday mass
SUMMARY: Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, at the Cathedral of St Peter the Apostle in Jackson. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day period leading to Easter, excluding Sundays. Worshipers at the service will have ashes imposed on their foreheads with the reminder, “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent and believe in the gospel.” The ashes are made from palm branches used in the previous year's Palm Sunday. It is a popular service, even for non-Catholics, and signifies a time of preparation and reflection leading up to Easter.
