Mississippi Insight for March 10, 2024: Reform or Replace?

SUMMARY: House lawmakers in Mississippi are considering a new funding formula for education called the “Inspire act” which aims to increase education spending. However, critics, including the Parents Campaign, are concerned that the new formula may underfund schools and not accurately reflect the needs of students. Additionally, the Parents Campaign is advocating for the extension of the Critical Teacher Shortage Act and against school vouchers that would divert public funds to private schools. Lawmakers are also working on a bill to restore voting rights to nonviolent felons. Ultimately, bipartisan support is needed to address these issues effectively.

Mississippi's House and Senate offer different takes on what to do with the Mississippi Adequate Education Program. We hear from House Speaker Jason White and the Parents' Campaign's Nancy Loome. Hosted by 12 News' Byron Brown and produced by Tom Wright.

Parents and supporters applauded as students received their white coats, symbolizing their transition from didactic to clinical training. After 29 months of education, students will graduate and become licensed physician assistants, ready to fill the void in the medical field. They can pursue various specialties, such as emergency medicine, surgery, family medicine, OBGYN, and pediatrics. The graduation ceremony will take place at MSU Meridian's Riley Center, open to all, tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Congratulations to the students on their hard work and dedication.

NALC Stamp out Hunger

SUMMARY: The National Association of Letter Carriers hosts the Stamp Out Hunger food drive on the 2nd Saturday of May each year. They ask people to leave a plastic bag of non-perishable items by their mailbox for carriers to collect. Last year, over 2700 pounds of food were collected. The organization hopes to surpass that number this year. Anyone can participate by leaving items by their mailbox on the designated day. Meridian Community College hosts Spring Signing Ceremony

SUMMARY: Maran Community College held a spring signing ceremony for student athletes moving on to the collegiate level. The ceremony included members of the softball, soccer, tennis, and baseball teams. MCC's president, Dr. Tom Hubner, celebrated his son Eli, a baseball player moving on to Arkansas Little Rock. The athletic directors and coaches are proud of the students' achievements and dedication. They strive to support and prepare students for success.
