Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce is looking to strengthen the local food supply
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce is offering funding through the Resilient Food System Infrastructure Program to strengthen the local food supply chain. They are making over $5.8 million available to create new revenue streams for producers and improve processing options for specialty crops, dairy, grains, and other food products. Funding will be awarded through infrastructure grants or equipment-only grants, with applications due by March 15th. The goal is to support local producers and enhance the state's food supply chain.
The department is now accepting applications for funding that would go towards strengthening the local food supply chain.

Safer Act bill is headed to the Governor's desk
SUMMARY: The bill banning transgender individuals from using bathrooms or dressing areas that do not match their sex assigned at birth has passed the House and Senate as Senate Bill 27-53, also known as the SAFER Act. The bill now awaits the governor's signature. This decision comes after President Joe Biden's administration expanded Title IX to protect LGBTQ+ individuals.

Medical center honors its volunteers Thursday
SUMMARY: South Central Regional Medical Center recently held its annual volunteer awards ceremony and appreciation reception, where they honored 43 volunteers who collectively contributed over 7,000 hours of service. These volunteers traditionally assisted in areas like the emergency department, Children's Academy offices, and nursing homes. Awards were given for Caring Teen Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. The hospital acknowledged that they hadn't been able to honor their volunteers since 2019, and expressed gratitude for their dedication. 'Stamp Out Hunger Day' set for May 11
SUMMARY: Christian Services is participating in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive to help feed those in need in the community. They provide food boxes to families in the Pine Belt region and rely on donations of non-perishable and canned items from the community. The National Association of letter carriers sponsors the national Stamp Out Hunger day every second Saturday in May to help fight hunger. People can help by leaving food by their mailbox in a plastic or brown paper bag for pick up. Donations are distributed to local food pantries to help feed families facing food insecurity.
