Mississippi court affirms conviction in the killing of a man whose body was found in a freezer
SUMMARY: Samantha Simmons was convicted of the murder of Thomas Burns and received a life sentence in prison. Burns' body was found stuffed in a freezer, and the state medical examiner found evidence of strangulation and asphyxia. Simmons' DNA was found on zip ties around Burns' neck, wrists, and ankles. She argued that the DNA evidence did not prove she killed Burns, but the Court of Appeals disagreed, stating that the DNA evidence could lead a reasonable juror to conclude that Simmons committed the murder. A witness also testified that Simmons had tried to sell some of Burns' belongings after his death.
