Mississippi bill would allow liquor sales 7 days a week
SUMMARY: House Bill 329 in Mississippi proposes allowing liquor stores to be open on Sundays from 1pm to 6pm if they choose to do so. Representative Brent Powell authored the bill, which passed in the House on March 1st and is now headed to the Senate for a final decision. Those in favor argue it would make alcohol laws more consumer friendly, while opponents express concerns about potential increased accidents and strain on law enforcement. If approved, the law would go into effect on July 1st, 2024, giving local municipalities the option to opt out through a reverse referendum.

New parking meters go up in downtown Jackson
SUMMARY: The city of Jackson is starting to issue tickets for parking violations in downtown. A two-week grace period is in place before enforcement begins. Drivers must use kiosks to enter their license plate and pay with a credit card or feed the meter. City leaders believe this change is necessary to generate revenue and make improvements. Though some are initially upset, others see the benefits of the new system. The parking rate will be one dollar per hour initially. Enforcement will be a joint effort between the city and SP Plus. The goal is to make downtown parking more efficient and generate funds for city improvements.
