Mississippi ballot initiative process faces narrowing path to being restored
SUMMARY: Efforts to revive Mississippi's ballot initiative process are facing challenges as Senate Republicans are giving weak support to proposals that differ significantly from House plans. The Senate passed a bill allowing residents to put policy proposals on statewide ballots, but several Republicans voted against it. The House had passed a resolution to restore the process through a constitutional amendment, while the Senate bill does not require a constitutional change, but has provisions that may be difficult to pass in the House. Both proposals have signature requirements and restrictions, with lawmakers aiming to prevent out-of-state influences from affecting ballot initiatives. Despite challenges, restoring the initiative process remains a legislative priority.
