SUMMARY: A small portion of Deer Island, a 400-acre wilderness island owned by the , is up for sale for $3.5 million. The owner, Larry Matranga, purchased a section of Deer Island in 2004 but has been unable to develop it due to challenges and changing economic conditions. Several projects have been proposed over the years, a resort with a $900 million price tag, but none have to fruition. Matranga remains hopeful that a sale could breathe new into his dream of developing Deer Island, which sees 16 million visitors annually. Various transportation options, such as duckboats, ferries, or a gondola system, have been considered for access to the island.

The state owns most of the 400-acre island, but an eight-acre section has been privately owned for decades.
