'We had to go'; Milton evacuees and pets seek shelter in Pearl River County
SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton is nearing landfall in Florida, causing extensive damage and prompting the National Weather Service to issue a record 90 tornado warnings. Many Floridians are evacuating, with concerns not only for their safety but also for their pets and livestock. Catherine Miller evacuated from Ridgemanor, bringing seven dogs but leaving behind other animals. The Aaron Reagan Animal Sanctuary in Pearl River County is offering shelter for evacuees’ animals, with President Tracy Bolino aiming to accommodate as many as possible. The sanctuary has raised over $5,000 in donations and has space for various types of animals, pledging to assist families for about two weeks.
As Floridians scramble to exit Hurricane Milton’s path, finding shelter for themselves isn’t the only concern.
