MAP: Emergency room visits for respiratory illnesses are soaring in these states
SUMMARY: As the New Year begins, many states are experiencing a surge in hospital visits due to respiratory illnesses, with emergency department visits for influenza and RSV reaching “very high” levels according to the CDC. The states most affected include Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Pediatric hospitals have been especially busy since November, as RSV cases rise alongside influenza infections. Symptoms for RSV, flu, and COVID-19 overlap, making diagnosis challenging. Health officials recommend annual flu vaccinations and good hygiene practices to protect against these illnesses. Additionally, the CDC is monitoring outbreaks of norovirus and sporadic cases of bird flu, though the public risk remains low.

FTC to regulate junk fees | FOX 5 News
SUMMARY: The FTC is implementing new regulations to address junk fees, which are hidden extra charges added late in purchases for live events, short-term rentals, and hotels. Effective May 12, businesses must disclose these fees upfront, enabling consumers to see true costs before committing. This rule doesn’t eliminate fees but promotes transparency and fair comparison shopping. The initiative was prioritized by the Biden administration and has bipartisan support. Consumers can report violations to the FTC, which will monitor trends and impose fines if necessary. This marks a significant step toward transparency in pricing, with potential expansion to other sectors in the future.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is working to regulate junk fees, or additional charges tacked onto the price of a good or service. Think concert ticket prices after the fees — they usually take consumers by surprise. FOX LOCAL streaming host Elizabeth Rawlins talks to FOX 5 I-Team reporter Dana Fowle about junk fees and the changes coming soon.
