Lucedale man sentenced to 40 years for ATV crash that killed 2, injured 1
SUMMARY: Derrick Chavers, 38, from Lucedale, has been sentenced to 40 years for manslaughter and aggravated assault after fatally crashing his ATV into a party crowd in Leakesville, killing two people aged 17 and 23, and seriously injuring a 25-year-old. The 2020 incident occurred when Chavers, reportedly with impaired judgment, drove at double the speed limit into the group, including brothers Christopher and Wesley Smith, who were outside following a fight. The survivor, Christopher Smith, recounted the event to WKRG. Chavers had arrived uninvited at the party.

The university has received $18 million to upgrade its veterinary facilities in support of the initiative starting this fall, with penalties for recipients who don't fulfill their practice obligations.
