Cigar shop leaving Smith-Wills Stadium grounds after legislation scrutiny
SUMMARY: Churchill Cigar Shoppe, located on Smith Wills Stadium grounds, is closing after its 10-year anniversary in June due to legislative scrutiny over land use. Co-owner Preston Powell and Hank Aaron Sports Academy CEO Timothy Bennett aim to prevent contractual discrepancies and preserve the stadium's legacy for community sports. However, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba criticizes House Bill 1983, signed by Governor Reeves, as a state power grab, alleging it undermines Jackson's resources. The bill includes state project funding but demands the land revert to state ownership, contradicting its 1944 deed stipulation for park purposes. Lumumba disputes the legislation's vagueness but vows litigation if necessary.

Seven rescued by law enforcement after being stuck on sandbar in Monroe County
SUMMARY: The Monroe County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook about a potentially deadly situation where seven people, including children, were stranded on a sandbar in Town Creek due to rapidly rising water from an upstream storm. The County's 911 dispatch received the call for help, and Sheriff Kevin Crook explained that the swift water was deceptive. One deputy went to his home in Amory to get his boat and, along with an officer from the state wildlife department, rescued everyone from the sandbar. The sudden water increase was due to a storm several miles upstream.
