Leaders reflect on deadly Columbus tornado
SUMMARY: Five years have passed since a destructive tornado hit Columbus, causing extensive damage and claiming two lives. The event hit close to home for many, with homes and businesses being destroyed. Unfortunately, many of those impacted did not have home insurance, making recovery challenging. Emergency Management had conducted exercises prior to the tornado, which helped them respond better. The community, including the United Methodist Church and local organizations, came together to provide relief and support to those affected. The response to the tornado led to the formation of Community Recovery of Lowndes County. The community’s unity and assistance were crucial in the recovery process.
