Lawmakers are looking at a bill that would defund or ban diversity initiatives from public
SUMMARY: Lawmakers in multiple states, including Mississippi, are considering bills to defund or ban diversity initiatives at universities and public institutions. State auditor Shad White was inspired by similar actions in other states to study the spending on diversity programs in Mississippi's public universities. Representative Becky Curry introduced a bill to ban funding for campus activities labeled as social activism and also for diversity officers. This bill has been referred to a house committee for consideration. Republican lawmakers in 20 states have proposed about 50 bills this year to restrict or require public disclosure of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
