Jackson students learn about financial aid assistance as they plan their future
SUMMARY: Jackson State University hosted an event for high school seniors to help them decide where to further their education. Hundreds of students attended to explore their options. Some students, like Chanel Huntley, are planning to attend technical schools and pursue business degrees. The event also focused on the importance of submitting financial aid applications, with a decrease in submissions this year due to changes in the FAFSA application. JSU is providing assistance to students with completing the FAFSA. School officials stress the importance of choosing a college that is best for the individual student.

Interview: Wives of Warriors to host 9th Blessed are the Peacemakers 5k
SUMMARY: The Wives of Warriors will host their Ninth Annual Blessed Are the Peacemakers 5K event to fundraise for bulletproof vests for officers in need. Amanda Merill, a representative, explains that the organization aims to support law enforcement by providing protective equipment. They have donated 222 vests so far and the race on May 18th in Tupelo is their biggest fundraiser. A virtual component allows participants nationwide to register. The event has grown in participation over the years, with around 300-350 attendees annually. The goal is to ensure all officers have the necessary gear to stay safe on the job.

5-year-old electrocuted Thursday night in West Point
SUMMARY: A 5-year-old boy was electrocuted at a sports complex in West Point but is recovering well in hospital. The incident happened at a local baseball field where it is believed the boy came into contact with an electric box on a light pole. He was alert when taken to the hospital for further testing. The West Point Police Officer has confirmed the incident and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause. The West Point water and light department has shut down the complex to ensure safety. Baseball games will resume on Monday as police continue to investigate the incident.

Medgar Evers posthumously awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom
SUMMARY: President Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to civil rights leader Medgar Evers posthumously. Evers, who served in World War II and then became a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, was assassinated in 1963 at the age of 37. Evers was praised by Mississippi's congressional delegation for his continued impact on the fight for equality. Senator Roger Wicker noted that Evers' work inspired generations and continues to resonate today. Congressman Bennie Thompson highlighted Evers' tireless pursuit of equality for African Americans in Mississippi. Evers was one of 19 individuals recognized by President Biden with the Medal of Freedom.
