How does river dredging work?

SUMMARY: The US Army Corps of Engineers is currently using the dredge ship Jadwin to silt and keep the Mississippi open in Vicksburg. The drop in levels has created obstacles and sandbars in usually navigable , causing difficulties for large ships. The Jadwin, along with other dustpan dredges, is using underwater high velocity jets to churn up and remove the sand and silt, depositing it to the sides using a floating pipeline. Despite the challenges, the Jadwin is celebrating its 90th year of service and will continue working until December, dependent on future rainfall.
