Here’s what’s happening this Juneteenth on the MS Coast
SUMMARY: While President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, it took more than two years for the news to reach more than 250,000 slaves in the country's remotest state at the time, Texas. Juneteenth, which is Monday, June 19 and is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, started as an annual celebration in Galveston, Texas but communities across the country have adopted the anniversary as a day to commemorate the end of slavery.
