Greenwood Leflore CEO: Critical hospital access status is the only viable solution

SUMMARY: Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Mississippi is set to go up for lease as the state’s hospital crisis continues. The hospital has applied for critical hospital access status, which would make it eligible for more federal funding, but putting the hospital up for lease is a backup plan. Multiple entities have expressed interest in leasing the hospital, but the main goal is still to attain critical hospital access status. The hospital is currently 28 miles away from the next-closest hospital, which has made it difficult to receive the designation. The hospital’s CEO is optimistic that a decision will be announced in late 2023. The hospital has extended its lifespan through various sources of funding, but it is still awaiting nearly $1 million from the state’s Hospital Sustainability Grant Program. Full Medicaid expansion is seen as too late to help the hospital, and critical access status is seen as the only remaining solution.
