First welding class of women inmates graduates from MDOC program
SUMMARY: A group of female inmates at the Mississippi Correctional Institute for Women (MCIW) have become the first graduating class in the state's welding vocational program. Ten women enrolled in intensive classroom study and passed rigorous tests to become certified welders. Their certification will make them employable in industries such as ironworks and shipbuilding. SUMMARY: Gary Raymon Rush, a 35-year-old from Meridian, received a 50-year prison sentence without parole for sex crimes against a 12-year-old child. Circuit Court Judge Randi P. Mueller issued the sentence for sexual battery and two counts of touching a child for lustful purposes. Rush had been found guilty by a Biloxi jury after evidence surfaced that he had been caught in the victim's bedroom by a family member. The abuse occurred at night and started two weeks before it was discovered. Rush also had a prior guilty plea for attempted rape in Lauderdale County. He will serve his sentence in the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
