Countdown to Kickoff 2023: Picayune Maroon Tide
SUMMARY: The Picayune Maroon Tide, the back-to-back defending 5A state champions, are entering a new year and a new classification as they move up to 6A. The team's goal remains the same – to come home with another gold ball. Head coach Cody Stogner emphasizes the need to continue working hard and not get complacent. Despite losing key player Dante Dowdell, the Tide have strong returners on both sides of the ball, including Stanford commit Chris Davis. The seniors on the team appreciate the strong bond and familiarity with their teammates. Picayune will start the season on the road against Brandon.

Mississippi Sound Coalition keeping up fight to protect from pollution caused by Spillway opening
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Sound Coalition is fighting against pollution caused by the 2019 Bonnie Cary Spillway openings. Studies show that a Louisiana diversion project could further harm the waters of the Mississippi Sound, causing devastation to marine life and the fishing industry. Officials in Louisiana want to rebuild marshlands with diversion water, but the Coalition believes this will be harmful. They are also concerned about potential negative impacts from opening the spillway more in the future. The Coalition is working to prevent these harmful impacts and protect the Mississippi Sound and surrounding areas from destruction. They are also focused on protecting the Louisiana Fisheries from being destroyed.

Small section of Deer Island up for sale
SUMMARY: A small portion of Deer Island, a 400-acre wilderness island owned by the state, is up for sale for $3.5 million. The owner, Larry Matranga, purchased a section of Deer Island in 2004 but has been unable to develop it due to infrastructure challenges and changing economic conditions. Several development projects have been proposed over the years, including a resort with a $900 million price tag, but none have come to fruition. Matranga remains hopeful that a sale could breathe new life into his dream of developing Deer Island, which sees 16 million visitors annually. Various transportation options, such as duckboats, ferries, or a gondola system, have been considered for access to the island.
The state owns most of the 400-acre island, but an eight-acre section has been privately owned for decades.
