City leaders find ways to stop shootings in Columbus city limits
SUMMARY: City officials in Columbus are cracking down on gun violence, with plans to increase fines and potentially require jail time for those who fire guns in city limits. City Council members, including Steven Jones, are working on implementing stricter penalties to address the issue. Jones emphasized the need for consequences to create fear of the law and deter individuals from engaging in gun violence. The conversation about this initiative began last week, and it is expected to be voted on during the next city council meeting. Residents are supportive of these efforts to address the ongoing problem of gun violence in Columbus.

River Avenue Bridge nearing completion
SUMMARY: Months of work on the River Avenue Bridge connecting Hattisburg and Pedal in Forrest County have been delayed, leaving drivers still unable to use it. Leaders say the bridge is nearing completion but are unable to provide a projected opening date due to unforeseen delays caused by rain. Crews still need to grind down uneven spots in the concrete before painting the railing and allowing traffic. Once completed, a portion of South Main Street will close for drainage pipe installation. While they work to finish the project, drivers are reminded to be cautious and patient around the construction site.
After months of work and pushed back dates, people in Forrest County are still unable to drive over the River Avenue Bridge connecting Hattiesburg and Petal.
