Attorney discusses lawsuit after teen dies at Hattiesburg poultry plant
SUMMARY: The family of Duvan Tomas Perez, who was killed while working at Mar Jac Poultry in Hattiesburg, has filed a lawsuit against the company. Perez was killed after becoming trapped in machinery he was cleaning. The lawsuit claims that Mar-Jac did not follow regulations requiring machinery to be shut off during sanitation. It also claims that the company was negligent in illegally assigning a 16-year-old to work at the plant. The family hopes the lawsuit will encourage industry-wide change in following regulations and verifying ages, and they are calling on companies to not purchase supplies from Mar-Jac until working conditions improve. The U.S. Department of Labor is still investigating OSHA for possible child labor law violations.
