Alex Murdaugh is denied new double-murder trial after judge hears jury tampering allegations
SUMMARY: A South Carolina judge denied Alex Murdaugh's bid for a new trial after his defense accused a clerk of court of tampering with the jury. The judge did not believe the clerk's denial of speaking to jurors. Murdaugh, a convicted killer, disbarred attorney, and admitted thief serving a life sentence, was present at the hearing. One juror testified that the clerk influenced her to find him guilty, but 11 other jurors stated that their verdicts were not influenced. Despite the denial of a new trial, Murdaugh's lawyers remain optimistic that his conviction will be overturned in the appeals court. They also claim that the trial was unfair due to allowing testimony of his financial crimes. Murdaugh is also serving 27 years for stealing $12 million and has not started the regular appeals of his sentence.
