Access restricted, fencing added to 4th Street garage at USM
SUMMARY: Southern Miss is restricting access to the upper floor of the university's parking garage indefinitely after the deaths of two students in separate falls in 2021 and 2023. The Forrest County Coroner's office confirmed the cause of death and USM put up signage with suicide and crisis lifeline numbers, as well as protective fencing around the fourth floor. The fifth floor will be reopened after additional fencing is added. This decision comes as a response to the tragic incidents, aiming to prevent further tragedies and provide support for those in crisis.
This comes after the deaths of two students, who died in separate falls from the garage over the last three years.
