Cicada Mania: Expect a very noisy summer
SUMMARY: A rare emergence of a 13-year brood of cicadas is happening this year, leading to a higher number of these insects than usual. These cicadas, with orange bodies and red eyes, appear every 13 years, unlike the annual green cicadas seen more frequently. In 2011, the last emergence of this specific brood occurred in Mississippi, where research is being conducted at Mississippi State University. Approximately half a million to a million cicadas per acre can be expected in the right habitat, mainly in Upland Hardwoods. While these noisy insects may disrupt outdoor activities, no major effects on daily life are anticipated. Two other 13-year cicada broods are expected in Mississippi in 2027 and 2028.
