JPS students display their artwork
SUMMARY: Hundreds of Jackson Public School students displayed their art at Cardoza Middle School on the fourth Thursday of March. 150 pieces were showcased in the first district-wide art exhibit, with 12 judges from around the state evaluating the artwork. Created by 14 different schools, the exhibit allowed students to express themselves and tell their stories through their art. Art coordinators highlighted the sense of community and progression in artistic skills from kindergarten to 12th grade. Award-winning artist and filmmaker Tellam Brice served as a judge and keynote speaker at the event, inspiring the young artists with his expertise.

SUMMARY: Hattisburg Police Department has introduced handheld radar cameras in school zones to catch speeding drivers. Crossing guards and officers have noticed some change, but many drivers are still not slowing down. Over 400 speeding violations have been recorded in the first two weeks of the pilot program, with some drivers going well over the 50 mph speed limit. Despite plea from officers to slow down and be mindful of crossing guards and children, some drivers continue to speed. The pilot program will continue throughout the school year, with plans to implement the technology in all school zones next year if successful.

SUMMARY: MDOT is in the midst of a massive milling and repaving project on I-20, with the work largely being done overnight to minimize impact on drivers. The project involves grinding away the brittle road surface, filling troubled spots, and placing a top layer of asphalt. Although this is a temporary fix, a more permanent solution will be needed in the future. The current phase of the project is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. The project includes a $14 million job on I-20 and repairs to the Brandon Bridge. Drivers have mixed feelings about the road conditions but appreciate the efforts to improve them.
