Hattiesburg residents reflect on 'Freedom Summer'
SUMMARY: It has been almost 60 years since Freedom Summer, a project aimed at helping African Americans gain the right to vote in Mississippi. Volunteers recruited to help stage protests and get African Americans to the polls. Freedom Schools were built to provide quality education for African American children. The project ultimately played an important role in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Interviews with Hattiesburg residents, including Glenda Funchess and Mattie Lindsey, highlight the impact of Freedom Summer. Their recordings will be included in the U.S. Library of Congress for future generations to understand the importance of voting rights.
