State program works to get new count
SUMMARY: Mississippi is home to black bears, with the largest concentrations found along the Mississippi River in the Delta. The Black Bear Program of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks is working on getting a new count of these bears. Anthony Ballard, the program leader, advises residents to remain calm if they encounter a bear and to slowly move away, as black bears are typically shy. Bear sightings are rare in the area, but precautions should be taken to avoid attracting them with food. It is important to remember that black bears are not confrontational and usually avoid human contact.
