TVA sets all-time high for power demand
SUMMARY: The Tennessee Valley Authority experienced a record high in power demand due to extremely cold temperatures. The preliminary number for January 17 was 34,526 megawatts, breaking the previous record set in 2007. The TVA is asking customers to conserve power as much as possible. Local utilities and co-operatives receive electricity from the TVA. Despite the increased demand, the TVA stated that its grid is stable and that its generating facilities are performing well.

Partnership among Lowndes County Schools, Columbus Air Force Base, and Department of Rehabilitation Services teaches work skills – Home – WCBI TV
SUMMARY: A partnership among the Lowndes County School District, Columbus Air Force Base, and the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services is benefiting special needs students through Project SEARCH. The program allows students to spend their final school year working various jobs at Columbus Air Force Base to learn job skills and handle work responsibilities. Project SEARCH aims to build confidence in students, enabling them to become contributing members of society. Currently operating in Ohio and 48 other states, the program seeks to expand within Mississippi, growing from 22 to 28 sites next year. This year, 6 students graduated from the program.

Occasional rain next several days
SUMMARY: A cold front has become stationary across Central and Southern Mississippi, resulting in heavy clouds and rain for the next several days. On Tuesday night, clouds built from the West and Southwest, leading to overnight lows in the low to middle 60s. Wednesday will see continued heavy clouds with a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms; high temperatures will reach the mid-80s. By Thursday, cooler air from a brief cold front will drop temperatures to the lower 80s with scattered rain chances at 30% and possible thunderstorms. Conditions remain mostly pleasant due to lower humidity.

Hinds County residents oppose proposed solar farm
SUMMARY: HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Some residents in Hinds County are opposing a proposed solar farm near their homes. During a meeting with the Hinds County Planning Commission, opinions were divided. Apex Clean Energy representatives highlighted the benefits of clean electricity, while some Raymond residents voiced concerns about the impact on agriculture and wildlife. Justin Franklin noted the farm would cover 6,500 acres of farmland and wilderness, affecting local wildlife. The proposed solar farm would be fenced within 4,000 acres around Bolton and Raymond. The project was not approved, and another meeting is scheduled for June 17 with the Hinds County Board of Supervisors.
