Federal Judge dismisses restraining orders, other motions in HB 1020 lawsuit
SUMMARY: Judge Henry Wingate declared that most of the pending motions against House Bill 10-20 in Jackson, regarding the appointment of four judges, are moot. A lawsuit filed by civil rights activists contested the provision of the bill that allowed Chief Justice Michael Randolph to appoint the judges, which was ruled unconstitutional by the Mississippi Supreme Court. Legal analyst Matt Steffey explained that the federal lawsuit was brought up to speed with the state court ruling, which voided the appointments. While an appeal on Judge Wingate's decision is possible, Steffey doubts it would be successful.
United States District Court Judge Henry Wingate recently declared most pending actions made against House Bill 1020 as moot.
