Judge dismisses restraining orders in HB 1020 lawsuit
SUMMARY: Judge Henry Wingate declared that most of the pending motions against House Bill 10-20 are now irrelevant. A lawsuit filed by civil rights activists contested a part of the bill that would allow Chief Justice Michael Randolph to appoint four judges. However, a prior Mississippi Supreme Court ruling had already declared the appointment of special circuit judges as unconstitutional, making the appointments void. Legal analyst Matt Steffey explained that the federal lawsuit is catching up to what happened in the state court, and doubts that an appeal on Wingate's decision will be successful. Overall, the state Supreme Court has already nullified the provision for appointed circuit judges, making the issue moot.

SUMMARY: Covington County Hospital in Mississippi is now home to a Safe Haven baby box, providing mothers in crisis with a safe place to surrender their newborns. The hospital hosted a blessing ceremony for the baby box, offering an alternative for women who are not ready for motherhood. This new option allows mothers to give up their babies anonymously within 45 days of birth. The baby box maintains a constant temperature and has alarms to alert authorities when a baby is placed inside. The Covington County Republican women raised $20,000 in donations to purchase the baby box, which is the third of its kind in Mississippi.
A blessing was held at the Covington County Hospital for its Safe Haven Baby Box on Tuesday.

SUMMARY: This morning, torches were raised to the sky at the Special Olympics torch run in Mississippi. The law enforcement torch run started at Dumont Plaza, with first responders, law enforcement officers, and Special Olympics athletes coming together to show support. The torch will be passed on to Jackson tomorrow to continue showing support for the athletes. This event aims to demonstrate that the community stands behind and appreciates the efforts of Special Olympics athletes.
