MDOT continues work around the Pine Belt
SUMMARY: The ongoing construction project does not include any lane closures, and crews are taking a break for the holidays. Work will resume on January 2nd, 2023, on one of MDOT's biggest Pine Belt projects from 2023 that will finish up sometime next year. MDOT has also lowered the grade to improve sight distance and built retaining walls. In 2024, Mil and overlay work will continue between Myers Creek and U.S. 11. Additionally, a new traffic pattern, an R-cut, was designed at an intersection to reduce the number of crashes. MDOT is working with a contractor to complete a new alignment and bridge by the summer. Once the work is finished, MDOT plans to improve safety by upgrading to a more modern concrete bridge. All of these projects will be completed in 2024, barring any weather delays.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation continues working on the busy interstate from Moselle to the Lamar County line.

SUMMARY: Jackson Water is launching a new educational initiative called the Jackson Water Academy. Starting next month, the program will offer three two-hour sessions on the water system, treatment processes, billing, and sustainability. The aim is to provide insight into the efforts taken to rehabilitate the system and ensure its future sustainability. Applications for the June event are open, with a deadline at the end of May. The program seeks to increase public understanding of the local wastewater utility and its operations.

SUMMARY: The Planning Committee will discuss the matter at Tuesday's City Council meeting. M-DOT is preparing for overnight roadwork, starting at 7:00 PM tonight and continuing through 6:00 AM until Thursday. Crews will close lanes on the I-55 bridges over Highway 51 and the CNIC Railroad in Madison County to perform a concrete overlay. This work is part of an ongoing effort to repair the bridges.

SUMMARY: A fire truck crash in Wiggins injured a firefighter, who was responding to a single-vehicle accident. Around midnight, the Wiggins Fire Department's engine rolled multiple times en route, trapping a firefighter underneath. The firefighter was rescued using the jaws of life and transported to a hospital, where she has been discharged and is expected to fully recover. The person involved in the initial single-vehicle accident was also freed and was uninjured. Fire Chief Steve Purvis provided this information.
