Oral arguments set in Mississippi private school funding appeal
SUMMARY: The Mississippi State Supreme Court is hearing an appeal challenging the constitutionality of private schools receiving public funds. In 2022, the state legislature allocated $10 million in federal ARPA dollars for private schools, which was challenged in court by the nonprofit organization Parents for Public Schools. The Hinds County Chancery Court judge found it unconstitutional to provide public money for private schools. The state is now appealing this decision, arguing that the legislature has the right to allocate federal funding to private schools. The oral arguments are set for February 6th, 2024, and the controversy revolves around whether public money for education should go to public schools or private schools.
