History of Lucedale’s Annual Christmas Parade
SUMMARY: The Lucedale Christmas Parade, a much-anticipated annual event, has been delighting the community since 1955, with Santa Claus as the centerpiece. The first parade featured 14 themed floats, including ones inspired by Mother Goose characters, sponsored by local clubs and organizations. Originally, in 1950, Santa would arrive escorted by the sheriff and high school band. The parade has evolved, with the Jaycees and later the Rotary Club taking over as sponsors, and the addition of a Grand Marshal started in 1990. The parade now boasts over 70 entries and is considered one of South Mississippi's best, with this year's Grand Marshals being the state champion high school girls' softball team.

Deer Fly Season on the Coast – Oh My!
SUMMARY: In coastal Mississippi, residents brace themselves each year for Deer Fly season in May, following the Sand Fly season in March. These pests, known for their buzzing and biting, are a significant nuisance, targeting exposed skin, particularly around the head due to their attraction to heat. Deer flies, which females require blood, thrive in the area's marshlands, feasting on various mammals, including humans. Despite the lack of effective chemical deterrents, residents employ creative strategies like using insect nets or sticky traps to combat these flies. These efforts, while somewhat effective, also inadvertently provide a form of exercise and a shared experience for the community, humorously dubbed the “Deer Fly dance”.

Helping Disadvantaged Coast Communities with Environmental Actions
SUMMARY: On May 1, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $2,499,800 grant to The Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain (LTMCP) to aid disadvantaged communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Announced by Cesar Zapata and Marc Wyatt of the EPA, the funding is part of the EPA's Environmental Justice Program. Over five years, it will support identifying and implementing projects to improve environmental conditions in six coastal counties of Mississippi. The initiative aims to simplify the grant process for these communities, enabling them to develop nature-based solutions to pollution and engage actively in environmental improvement efforts.
