Mississippi guardsman takes first steps after suffering heat stroke
SUMMARY: An 18-year-old guardsman from Hattiesburg, Colby-Maury-Rice, is recovering after suffering severe heat stroke during training in triple-digit temperatures at Camp Shelby. He was in a coma for 57 days due to brain and kidney damage. However, since waking up, his progress has been remarkable. He no longer requires dialysis or a breathing apparatus, and his kidneys and lungs are functioning well. He is currently undergoing physical therapy in New Orleans to regain his strength and memory. To help with the expensive treatments, students at Rice's alma mater organized a fundraiser and raised over $10,000. Rice's family is grateful for the community's support and hopes to have him home for Thanksgiving.
