Mississippi River Bridge affected by low water levels
SUMMARY: Low water levels on the river are not only impacting travel, but also bridge structures. The Vicksburg Bridge Commission of Warren County has noticed that when the water drops below 15 feet above the zero gauge, the banks dry out and the sand dries out, causing movement in the piers. This movement, although seemingly small, is significant for a 300-foot tall pier and makes it difficult for expansion joints to work properly during hot and cold weather. Despite little rainfall, the commission is working to maintain and repair the bridge, but they cannot fully control the movement caused by low water levels.
