Mississippi Insight for Sept. 3, 2023: Reeves, Presley, Kemp and Cain
SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves holds a steady lead over Democrat Brandon Presley in the gubernatorial race, according to new polling. The poll, conducted by Mississippi Today and Siena College, shows Reeves with an 11-point lead over Presley. The polling also found that voters in Mississippi are concerned about the hospital crisis in the state, with 70% expressing high levels of concern. On the issue of corruption, voters are split on which candidate would do a better job addressing it. In the Attorney General's race, incumbent Lynn Fitch leads with 54% support, while Democrat Greta Kemp Martin has 35% support. Corrections Commissioner Earl Kane discusses the progress made in the Department of Corrections, including the improvements in the Parchman facility.

New program will teach Jacksonians how the water system works
SUMMARY: Jackson Water is launching a new educational initiative called the Jackson Water Academy. Starting next month, the program will offer three two-hour sessions on the water system, treatment processes, billing, and sustainability. The aim is to provide insight into the efforts taken to rehabilitate the system and ensure its future sustainability. Applications for the June event are open, with a deadline at the end of May. The program seeks to increase public understanding of the local wastewater utility and its operations.

Wiggins firefighter pinned in fire engine accident released from hospital
SUMMARY: A fire truck crash in Wiggins injured a firefighter, who was responding to a single-vehicle accident. Around midnight, the Wiggins Fire Department's engine rolled multiple times en route, trapping a firefighter underneath. The firefighter was rescued using the jaws of life and transported to a hospital, where she has been discharged and is expected to fully recover. The person involved in the initial single-vehicle accident was also freed and was uninjured. Fire Chief Steve Purvis provided this information.
