SUMMARY: The Hurricane Katrina Memorial in Biloxi, built by 130 employees and subcontractors of ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” was completed in February 2006. It features the names of those who died or went missing during the storm, etched onto a wall the size of the tidal surge that hit the Gulf Coast. The memorial also holds items that were found washed up after the hurricane. Working for the City of Biloxi when Katrina hit, Vincent Creel commented that the memorial symbolizes resilience, representing the belief that “we will always be able to get through” any disaster.

USM Army and Air Force ROTC programs host Commissioning Ceremonies

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
