Legislative Black Caucus wants Rankin County deputies indicted
SUMMARY: Black legislators in Mississippi are calling for the indictment of former Rankin County deputies involved in the alleged torture and assault of Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker. The Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus has sent a letter to Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch requesting the indictment of the deputies and an off-duty Richland police officer. Rep. Christopher Bell criticized Fitch's silence on the issue and emphasized the need for justice for victims of law enforcement misconduct. The deputies were fired, and the officer resigned. The case has prompted a Justice Department civil rights probe and a federal lawsuit seeking $400 million in damages.
