Civil rights icon James Meredith, 90, falls at Mississippi event but has no visible injuries
SUMMARY: Civil rights activist James Meredith fell during an event marking his 90th birthday outside the Mississippi Capitol. Witnesses helped him back up, and he remained at the event until it ended. Afterward, an ambulance crew checked him, and he went home with friends and family. Meredith was the first Black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi in 1962. In 1966, he was shot and wounded while promoting Black voting rights. The Civil Rights Movement leaders continued his march, and thousands rallied outside the Mississippi Capitol in support of his cause.
