Mississippi governor enacts ‘Walker’s Law’ creating criminal offense for sextortion
SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed “Walker's Law,” a bill to criminalize sextortion, into effect. The law, named after Walker Montgomery, a Starkville Academy student who took his life after online exploitation, defines sextortion as threatening to share private images to coerce someone into providing more images or valuables. Starting July 1, perpetrators will face up to 5, 10, or 15 years in prison for first, second, or subsequent offenses, respectively. Aggravated cases involving minors or leading to great bodily harm have additional provisions. Underage offenders may be referred to behavioral health counseling.
